Master Bedroom Progress

So, this room will be ever changing. There are some ideas I have in my head. And in a perfect world where money goes on trees and the days have no time limits and oh, we didn't need to sleep... maybe this room would be done. But ah, that's not the case! So, slowly, we are injecting "us" into this space. And I can't wait to show you another progression post about this room.

I've realized through blogging...and watching myself with others that it TRULY "doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful." You should really enjoy your home. You should enjoy that $100 comforter and don't sweat it if the dog throws up on it. Or your big, fat lazy lab likes to sneak in and sleep on it getting black doggie hairs everywhere...

My point is, things are meant to be used. And yes, these photos show a clean room. But you know what, this room is NOT clean all the time. We LIVE here. I think anyone who was going to post their photos in front of hundreds or thousands on the internet... would clean their house first, just saying. So, please remember before you get down on yourself about not having the perfect house, don't. NONE of us have a perfect house. All of us want to change things. All of us want a magazine worthy house. But for now, enjoy the house you're in. Just do me a favor and buy the freaking comforter!

So here's how the room somewhat started... Still love the windows. Still love the bead board wall. Definitely serves as a great focal point as soon as you walk through our bedroom door.

I really didn't want to post the photo below because it's not a finished photo but what I wanted to show was not completion but progress. Progress shows in this not so pretty photo of somewhat where I was headed... and what I wanted this room to feel like.

And here's what it looked like this evening. I changed out the linen like "grain sack" stamped curtains (which are now available at Vintage Living Marketplace in the HBA room). I would like to sometime soon add window headers to the top of our windows for some extra umph. For some extra character and some extra...Ally :-) Get it yet? My husband...doesn't either ha!

Something I would love to do is to switch our dresser and nightstands. I really would love something a little more rustic. Not so much of the feminine lines or the white even. I'd like to see some rustic wood, some grey and cool tones maybe... but have yet to find any nightstands that may coordinate with a separate dresser. The search shall continue...

Master Bedroom- Updates and the things that have changed...

Tonight, I get my husband back after him being away for some training! What a great Valentines gift, am I right? So, naturally, I've been cleaning and tidying up the house. I've had an urge lately to change a few elements in our bedroom and I wanted to let y'all in on the direction I think I am going…

If you remember, I shared our master bedroom reveal back in September. You can find the original post here. I loved the direction that it was heading but I knew there were a few things in the room that were "temporary." So, insert…a few months later and my wheels have been turning!

Here's back in September 2014.

And today, February 2015. Not too much has changed…and the lighting is a little different because these photos were taken at different times of the day. But we got new larger scale lamps,  we've added a few different accessories and I'm on the hunt for some linen/feed sack pillows...

And here's the view of our large window, master bathroom is inside that little white door.

And today. We also got new "linen/feedsack" like reproduction curtains. I love the faint writing on them…and especially love the length. I'm a fan of the puddling. We also added some old porch railings that had been taken apart to create a "pediment" look above the window. Eventually, we'd like to do window mantels above every window…but not sure when that will happen.

The old windows are currently sitting in the guest bedroom & my plan is to strip them down to the natural wood. I'm not sure if they will go back in here because I'm craving something else.

As you can see, Little is quite the fan of the camera. He is so cute, right?

I made the "Ruth" sign myself and am definitely a fan of that look for signs in general. I plan on making a few more for our house also.

I noticed after awhile this dresser is a catch all…and so right now, it's pretty basic, not really accessorized. I'm finding more and more…that I like simple. I like things that have a purpose. And I really don't like things that sit to look pretty anymore.. at least most things.

And here's a close up of the new lamps. I've been researching about how to create my own lamps out of architectural salvage…for something a bit different but spotted these at our local HomeGoods and really loved their size, color, shape & all around feel. They are rustic yet fresh, clean and simple.

Have you been working on a project lately? We're tackling lots as we speak so I can't wait to blog about all the changes in our home! Happy Valentines everyone!

DIY Bead board Wall

I wanted to do a quick run through of different elements of our master bedroom reveal. In case you missed it, click here and you can read the full post!

The first element of the room that I want to start with would definitely be our DIY bead board wall. Bead board is a thin, character driven product that looks lovely just about anywhere. You can buy a 4ftx8ft piece of bead board from Lowes and/or Home Depot for around $20/sheet. We were going to need 3 sheets per the calculations for our master bedroom.

So here's the tools that we used.

TOOLS

Jigsaw
Circular Saw
Bead board Sheet
Tape Measure
Trim
Liquid Nails construction adhesive Heavy Duty
Nail Gun with Nails
White paint
Wood filler

This was a pretty quick project that I recommend two people tackle. It's pretty simple really. Let me remind you of the before of our master bedroom. No character and just another room!

And here's a shot from my cell phone of the room before the wall and before decorating. Just using what I had on hand quickly and before we did anything to our Craigslist furniture.

For OUR master walls and please keep in mind yours will differ depending on your personal measurements, we used about 2 3/4 sheets of bead board so we had to rip one down to size. We first measured the wall and the bead board and made any appropriate cuts if there were outlets, etc. Then, we graciously covered the back of the bead board with liquid nails & made sure everything was lined up on our first wall. We simply "sat" the bead board on our existing baseboards, made sure everything was flush and straight and I took the nail gun to all corners, edges and middle to secure everything in place. We did this three different times.

The edges were rough from our cuts so we covered each side where the walls meet with trim. We also added crown molding which is completely optional to y'all! We used wood filler to fill the holes where the nailer went through and fill all gaps, holes, etc.

Overall, I am super happy with how it turned out and for less than $60, since we receive a 10% discount at Lowes and the rest of the supplies we had on hand, I'd say this project had a high impact for very low cost.  What do you think of our wall?

Things have already changed in this room so I can't wait to update y'all on even the small changes! Don't be afraid to take chances. I usually don't care for accent walls but if they looked like this, I really don't mind :) Best $50ish we have spent in awhile.

Master Bedroom Reveal & Source List

Welcome to our master bedroom! The time has finally come to reveal this room with y'all and I couldn't be more excited! We have never really decorated the master bedroom in any home that we have owned or lived in because usually it's on the back burner. It's a room I used to think that we just "sleep" in but realistically, it should be a place to come and unwind. A place to relax with your significant other… and a space to enjoy together. I wanted a cozy, cottage feel that had neutral, calming colors, something that I felt like I was at a cottage on the beach or on a lake. We wanted something ultimately where we could relax, enjoy our time together and feel at home. And we really love it.

Here's the before of the room from the MLS when we purchased the home.

Well, there you go! The long awaited master bedroom tour. We felt like we were at a great stopping point for this room but there still are small minor details that I'd like to tweak down the road...We really are enjoying the space that we created for ourselves…and are so happy with it. I will break down parts of our bedroom in posts to come, including the DIY's. Below, you will find a source list of everything in the room that I can remember :-) I hope you enjoyed the tour and please let us know what you think by leaving a comment here, on Instagram, or the Facebook page.

New headboard in the master bedroom & a surprise annoucement

I feel like I've been leaving everyone hanging and I'm sorry about that. I have a very bad, really annoying habit of getting caught up in the daily stresses and going 150mph at all times…that I forget to breathe and just enjoy now. I hope to get better about that in 2014.

For now,  I wanted to share with you a peek at our new headboard. As many of you know, at one time for our guest bedroom, I made a DIY nailhead trim Pottery Barn inspired headboard for our old guest bedroom. You can find out how I did that by clicking here. In our new home, very soon after we purchased it, we opted to purchase a temperpedic mattress set in king size. We used to have a queen and I will never go back! So long story short, we sold our old bedroom set and I've been slowly putting together on a budget our new bedroom including finding a new headboard vs. making one.

After doing the math for supplies, labor & materials, it came out cheaper and easier to just purchase this headboard from Kirklands that you can find here. It has nailhead trim on the sides and top which I feel doesn't take away from the tufting that I wanted as well. The material is a nice, neutral linen colored twill. I waited until Kirklands had a decent sale and matched that with free shipping to our local store which equalled out to me saving about $100. Perfect!

In case you were wondering, I started painting our bedroom and there's the sneak peek of the color near the window & lamp. I'm in love with that color so much and can't wait to share the full room reveal. I also plan to get new lamps and hopefully these will work in our guest bedroom or else they will go in the shop. I have two sets of this lamps and they are the perfect combination of rustic meets weathered wood… I just can't get enough. You may have noticed the end tables as well...

Here's abetter shot. We have two matching side tables, one on each side of the bed for the husband and I. I found them at a garage sale and I practically stole them. I even got money off the price because I was from North Carolina and the guy loved my accent. Uh huh ;-) I love the shape, the price was more than right and they have the potential to be painted although I'm not sure if I will yet.

More shots of the headboard. I have a few options from previous purchases for above the headboard. Pretty sure we will be doing a mirror but can't make any promises.

I love the subtle beauty of this headboard. With classic lines, tufted headboard and finished off with nailhead trim…and I forgot to take photos of the cute feet that it comes with.

Here are a few more detailed shots of the sides, nailhead trim and fabric. I am in love! If you love it too… go tell Kirklands that Home by Ally sent you on their Facebook page by clicking here. This is not a sponsored post, I just love my headboard. :))

I bought this bowl? at the antique mall awhile ago from a vendors booth that I frequent. It's perfect for one of my boxwood balls! And I also have books on my end table… lots of books. I did take the Hunger Games books out of the picture because I didn't want to be a dork! But at least I told you anyways! ;-) Hehe! The book I have below was a wonderful gift, a book of quotes.

And from the same vendor are these vintage pillow cases. They are so delicate and pretty.

Now that inspiration has really struck, I have started to browse for a new light fixture, a nice comforter or quilt and some accessories. I also picked up a large and long french provincial style dresser that mimics the lines of our side tables. I paid $100 for it but sold a few things to make it FREE. Let me know what y'all think of the new headboard and if you love it. If you don't…well… don't tell me.

Oh! And before I forget! Exciting news so I'll get right to it! Sadly, Dawn and I are both leaving Wildwood Antique Mall for a new adventure with our friend Heather, from Pinneapple Avenue! Heather is opening her own shop called "Rehab- Vintage Market & Unique Home Decor" and we will be located in her shop beginning next month! Here's a peek at her new logo that I had the privilege of making! I can't wait to show y'all progress of our space and hopefully you can come visit too!
