DIY Industrial Wire baskets

Like I shared in my last post that you can find here, I told you I was on the hunt for a few things for our sunroom amongst other rooms that we are working on as well. One of those things was baskets for inside of our tv stand. Initially, I thought that I wanted a nice warm and woven basket but found these babies today at TjMaxx. Although they were cute in their school bus yellow color, it doesn't fit into my decor. The best part about these baskets? They were $9.99 each, have a linen inside cover that is removable and washable and everything was marked down an extra 20% at one of our TjMaxx's since it was moving locations! Making them a whopping $8.00 each? Why yes, I'll take two.

Here's the tv stand before I got them. Nothing special. I actually just filled it with crap that was laying around so it didn't look like we just moved in. I know, brilliant.

Insert my $1.00 can of black spray paint from Lowes and I knew these babies could be even more fabulous but more importantly, my style. I've had a few of these baskets before in our previous houses and ended up putting them for sale at our sales that we do… I still love the look though! So, the point of my post is basically to consider can you do anything to any item to make it more you and your style? This was a great example for me, I really didn't care for the yellow but for the price and knowing that I had spray paint at home… can't beat it!

I tried to remember to take photos of the process…. kinda looks like Pittsburgh Steeler colors. My daddy would be happy about me saying that on here. This probably took me about 5 minutes to do both baskets. I used wood that is not seen in the photos to prop them up off the ground. And I should have put something down so I didn't spray my grass but I get excited and get ahead of myself a lot!

But I did show you the wood scraps I used to prop them up to dry on our back patio. I didn't worry about hitting the bottoms too much because I knew the inside linen covers would cover it just fine. I allowed them to dry for a few hours and then brought them back inside!

Here's how they look now… Black. I love the linen covers against the black. I'm thinking I'll look for a vintage cast iron plate to put on the front of each to add some interest. Right now, these hold doggie toys and harnesses… leashes, shirts, etc.

And here's a photo from a far. I hate cords. Have I mentioned the before? I will be doing something about that soon… so stay tuned! I'm also thinking of switching things up around the tv… or as my husband would chime in… "We could just get a bigger tv." So man-ish of him. The boxwoods moved right after I took this photo. As did a few other things in the sunroom so that's another thing to look out for soon! I am hoping to find some great stuff at Fancy Flea when that comes later this month!

While they were having this fabulous 20% everything sale, I picked up some dishes, a few shirts, some new dog toys and this beautiful throw that I've been eyeing for some time now! I love how thick it is.
And I found the perfect place for it on my new leather yardsale chair!

Remember when decorating to think outside of the box. And to not let even the small things pass by if you can do something with them. Get those creative juices flowing and enjoy it!

A new couch & a yardsale chair

I woke up this morning ready to find some great things for our store. And I didn't find a darn thing for the store. But I did find a nice, super cute, low profile… leather chair that is worn and lovely. With cute little queen anne feet and a nice little body. I was totally excited about that because I've envisioned something like it for our sunroom for some time now. I still can't decide if I like these feet or if I should order new chunky ones to make this chair feel a little more masculine. What's your take?

I figured I'd snap a few photos this evening because the lighting was gorgeous in the sunroom and show you a little more of our new couch and this new yard sale chair and also share with you some plans that I have for the space… I love the light in the photo below. Gorgeous evening.

It is very rustic… not brand new looking but not torn and rough. Just looks worn and sat in a lot which I like. Leather does look better with age, after all. I plan to find some cute pillows for my new couch as well as a small one for this chair. The antique table near this chair got painted matte black and I'm not sure if I am loving it but I am letting it sit to see if I like it or not. I just draped a throw across this chair for the time being and I really need to work on the table top decor of that table but for now, pictures of us and a boxwood will do. I love those lamps still though.

A few scratches and imperfections which all add rather than detract to the character and age of this chair. It is not an antique or probably even old at all but I still am loving it! See what I mean about the feet? I'm thinking something chunky but with a nod to an antique style.

Here's a better shot of that corner. Soon, I plan to add window molding to make above the windows chunkier and create a larger impact when walking into this room. For now, this chair adds just the right amount of contrast to this neutral and cozy room.

Here's a peek to the left of the room where the tv sits. Above the tv is an old rope bed that was already past gone so I cut off the headboard and plan to use it as a pediment for wall decor. I want to add either a bible scripture or a quote to it. I'm still unsure if I love that there as well. I added the chunky frames to either side of the tv and again, still not sure if I like those either. I moved our antique window frames into the master that I am currently trying to get done so I can reveal to y'all! Maybe I'll look for more window frames for either side but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them like usual.

Also in that corner, I purchased a large peace lily plant for some greenery color. I love the depth and color that plants add, including my favorite boxwoods.

Oh! And here's the peek at new couch. It's the Ektorp from Ikea that I have been eyeing for awhile forever! You can find it here. We opted to have the chaise in this sofa because my husband liked that option. We went with a new light beige cover called Tygelsjö beige that they just came out with. I really like the look of white but this soft beige seems more cozy to me. I am still on the hunt for throw pillows, a nice luxurious throw for the couch as well as an area rug. I am still leaning towards a nice jute rug but am hunting around for the best deal of course. And in case you were wondering, I am still loving the tv stand. I still would like to also get baskets for inside the doors of the tv stand.

And another peek to the right. The accessories and window moldings will really make this room pop! I am attending Fancy Flea in a few weeks with my partner in crime (Lucky Day Design Co.) so I am hoping to find a lot of great stuff for our house as well as for our shop!

I have a weakness for these pulls and lots of drawers. Oh, you too?

View from our near the leather chair. I am also on the hunt for a french door or older door to use for our sunroom out to our back patio. Oh, the searches… they never end!

Oh! And finally! If you follow on Facebook (here) you saw that I got new headshots for the blog and for my new real estate venture! Here's a few of my favorites below! I am always happy to hear from y'all so let me know what you think of everything and what you have found lately for your spaces!

Talk to y'all soon! XO

The truth about bloggers and perfect houses

Wanna know the truth about bloggers? And about their perfect houses? There is actually no truth to it. I love finding new blogs to follow and getting to "know" the bloggers through their blogs. But sometimes, I have to laugh. I have to laugh when they are "DIY-ing" or on a "budget" yet they have a 4,000 sq ft dream home they just built. Y'all. If they only knew what being on a budget was. But realistically, some people probably wonder the same thing about me too. I think it is AWESOME that more and more people are being thrifty and turning their houses into homes on a budget. It is amazing! My husband and I, thank the good Lord, have done well for ourselves, especially at our ages and are so thankful and count our blessings everyday. And some people just are not that lucky. Plan and simple. Which brings me to be honest with y'all about some things lately...

So, if y'all haven't noticed… I haven't been blogging. And it's not because I don't want to. And it's not because I'm not doing anything. I have been. I've been swamped from the shop we just opened which is such a blessing in itself and I am still amazed at our progress everyday. And if you haven't been watching on Facebook, you might not know that I got my real estate license here in the state of Florida and am beginning my career in that. As well as still doing interior decorating, photography, blogging, running my space in the shop and attempting to juggle my personal life. All of that along with a few things that I really can't say right now but would just ask that y'all please pray for our men and women fighting for our freedoms. Please let them know that they are loved, that they are missed and that you are thankful. Y'all. It has been hard. Really hard.

I browse Pinterest and find these amazing rooms… and want so badly to turn my house into this picture perfect image that I see on my screen. And I want it to happen overnight. And in the budget that I have for us. Which is basically not much. And I know that y'all have to do it too. You have to see these perfect photos and wish so badly that it was yours. And people gasped at your spaces. I get it, I do. But is it reality? No. There are kids with sticky fingers. And dogs who shed. Like mine who likes to lay on our new sofa after we fall asleep and when we leave for work. And yes, he knows he's not supposed to be on the sofa. Accidents happen and puppies can't control their bladders and kids will be kids. It happens. The important thing is to just remember to breathe. And enjoy it.

I don't ever want to be accused of not being honest or keeping it real on here. And I never thought that I'd even ever considering acknowledging all of this to readers, fans and people who follow me. What? A blogger who wished her home looked perfect? Wait? Why? But it's never going to happen. At least not for me. Because I like change. I like finding a curb side find that I know will be perfect for the living room even though there really isn't a "space" in mind for it yet. That's what we do, we try to figure it out as we go and just hope to God that it turns out ok with our less than mediocre budget.

And why do we compare ourselves to each other? WHY? Honestly, this post is really me writing to me. It's me just getting it out. Because I was going to bust if I didn't. I don't have a DIY project for you everyday and I probably won't ever have a DIY project for you everyday. I'm sorry. I probably won't believe you when you say you love my space. Because I'm struggling to love it. And about 99% of the time, I feel like I am talking to myself on this blog. But you know, that's ok. Because this blog, it's mine. It represents all my triumphs, all my flaws, all my mistakes, all my hits and all my misses. It represents my life, a life that I am trying so hard to make so perfect when it already is.

All I ask is that you stop being so darn hard on yourself. Stop comparing yourself to someone else. Stop beating yourself up. And you wouldn't let someone talk to you like that, so why are you talking to yourself like that? Be nice to yourself. Forgive yourself. Love yourself. And love your home. Because it's yours after all. Here's my last thought. Please cut me some slack. I'm doing my best and I'm giving as much as I can give right now, some days more than others. Some days I have to put a smile on and other days, I feel like all is right with the world. It happens. We all go through it. I hope you're proud and you're forgiving because I'm going to get better. I'm going to get better because I want more. I want this life. And I want huge things for Home by Ally, my house and my life. I want to be the relatable person that you turn to for advice. I want to be the down to Earth person that you love to listen to. I want to work my way up and we all remember where I started. I want to be recognized for good things and be the change in this world. I want to make a positive influence and help everyone I can. Most important to me, God forbid that something may happen to me tomorrow; I hope that everyone has nothing but good things to say about me while I am gone.

I'm trying to love my home and I'm trying to love myself. Have you tried?
Follow my journey.

And just for giggles. Here's real life through Home by Ally when I feel the need to change everything. I've been trying to declutter and get rid of all the things that I do not LOVE. Enjoy.

And those were just the front rooms. But I got rid of about three SUV loads full to donate to the local thrift store. Great feeling right there. I'll check back to show y'all the new couch here soon. I've currently been working on our guest bathroom, our master bedroom and the sunroom and all are about 75% done. I can't wait to show you the 100%. Hey, thanks for listening.

Dining Room Reveal & Source List

I suck. I want to get better about posting…and I will. I'm in a mindset right now for turning a new leaf for myself. Maybe I should save all of that for another post, a more "personal" post. So, today… I thought I'd clear off the table and show you where we are at with our dining room. Nothing is every truly "complete" in our home but we are loving where we are at. Probably just a few more accessories and this room really won't need anything else. And maybe a pretty dining set too ;-)

We choose to go with a round table for this house. As you remember, this was our old table and it really crowded the space. We have a very open floor plan and it just wasn't working no matter how much I loved the table. It was too many straight lines and needed something to soften up the space…

So, enter a connection through Home by Ally and I found a table for a very fair price that I didn't hate and that could work for the time being. I wanted something with more of an ornate base or something a little more rustic… but ya know, you don't even see the base. So, why would I spend a lot of money on a table for the base when you don't even see it? I do plan on painting this at some point… I've just let it been soaking in the past month so I can get a feel of what I am wanting out of it.

We also have not had a chandelier really since we moved in because I've went through about 4 of them and haven't been satisfied. So, what do you do when you are frustrated and indecisive? You go back to classic. You go back to things you LOVE and look for that. I LOVE lanterns. Especially lantern chandeliers. I pin them all the time on my Pinterest where you can follow me here. So, I got on Overstock.com and found one that beautiful AND VERY much in our price range! Talk about a breathe of fresh air! You can find my lantern chandelier here. It is a great price and I fully recommend it because it looks amazing! Just make sure if you order one that you are sure the scale & dimensions are right for your space. Ours is a smaller space so this worked for us. Currently, I am obsessed with Overstock.com and am really loving their products thus far. Maybe one day I'll get to work with them!

If you saw in the original photo of our old dining room table, you saw that this antique cupboard was against the wall. This is in my top 3 favorite pieces of furniture to date that I have ever found. I adore it, never tire of it and won't ever sell it. I decided to catty corner in to give the room more presence and again, soften the lines versus having everything straight. It works being in the corner.

Of course, we had to put our signature mini-boxwoods on the paneled doors and a woven bowl full of hydrangeas. Which reminds me, they are totally fake. I need to dry some out so I can fill them with beautiful, real ones. Beside the hutch to the left there is a mirror I have had for a few years. I've just never found the right "spot" for it until just a few days ago. Perfect scale for that tiny area. It was originally from Tuesday Morning. Here's a better shot of it.

Here's the view walking in from the front living area. Don't mind my obsession back there of boxwoods. Some are going to the store while others are finding new homes. If you noticed the chairs, they are from Ikea. They are the Henriksdal chairs that you can find here. I have four of them and I'm actually very impressed with how comfortable they are. We had to purchase the white floor length slipcovers separately and I am hoping to get another set soon. You can find the slipcover and chair here. I got lucky and searched my local area and on Craigslist. I got the chairs on a yard sale site and just had to buy the slipcovers. But since I had my OLD slipcovers, I sold them on Ebay which off set the price of the new ones. I do a lot of trading in and out and it works and helps with the budget.

Another thing in the picture I haven't spoken about was the rug! It was also from Overstock. You can find it here. Sign up for Overstock's emails because they are ALWAYS running sales so every time I buy something, I make sure that I have a coupon code handy!

The bowl in the center of the table is a tin bowl that was painted long ago. I'm not sure if I should put anything in it that we will consume so for now, I am just loving the "chippyness" of it. I found it through a local vendor at our antique mall. Perfect for a centerpiece for anything.

I'm really loving our progress in this space and hope you do too. It's always a work in progress and all of us get so caught up in everyday that we don't take the time to appreciate the little things in life. I wanted a space that was cozy, sophisticated and most importantly, comfortable. That is exactly what I feel like this is… The chairs are holding up well and I've washed them a few times… but they have lost some length although I washed them on cold. I guess that is expected. Everything else has been great! Hopefully I'll be back this week with a few furniture makeovers!

Let me know what y'all think and if you love any of these pictures, feel free to hover over the image and pin them on your Pinterest! Have a great Sunday!

Blog to watch in 2014: Center City Team

Just wanted to pop in on this rainy day to share just a little fun news…

I received an email a few weeks by from CenterCity Team, which is basically a group of highly admired real estate agents and brokers serving the Philadelphia area. They were searching for great DIY blogs to be selected as the "Best DIY/Home Improvement Blogs to watch in 2014!" I got the news a few days ago that my blog was amongst the winners! Pretty neat!

My blog stood out amongst stiff competition and is now featured on their site as a recommended entrepreneurial resource for our readers along side many other amazing blogs. If you wanna check out the list, you can do so by clicking here.

In other exciting news, I have been slammed working on the new shop along side my favorite girls. Husband is leaving soon… although I won't be posting dates, times or locations or really anything about it for that matter… my parents are coming to town next month sometime… and I've got a few projects that need to be completed around the house to say the least! Along with my long list of furniture to paint! Should be an interesting next few weeks. Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow with the dining room reveal if it is sunny and pretty so I can capture some pretty photos.

New headboard in the master bedroom & a surprise annoucement

I feel like I've been leaving everyone hanging and I'm sorry about that. I have a very bad, really annoying habit of getting caught up in the daily stresses and going 150mph at all times…that I forget to breathe and just enjoy now. I hope to get better about that in 2014.

For now,  I wanted to share with you a peek at our new headboard. As many of you know, at one time for our guest bedroom, I made a DIY nailhead trim Pottery Barn inspired headboard for our old guest bedroom. You can find out how I did that by clicking here. In our new home, very soon after we purchased it, we opted to purchase a temperpedic mattress set in king size. We used to have a queen and I will never go back! So long story short, we sold our old bedroom set and I've been slowly putting together on a budget our new bedroom including finding a new headboard vs. making one.

After doing the math for supplies, labor & materials, it came out cheaper and easier to just purchase this headboard from Kirklands that you can find here. It has nailhead trim on the sides and top which I feel doesn't take away from the tufting that I wanted as well. The material is a nice, neutral linen colored twill. I waited until Kirklands had a decent sale and matched that with free shipping to our local store which equalled out to me saving about $100. Perfect!

In case you were wondering, I started painting our bedroom and there's the sneak peek of the color near the window & lamp. I'm in love with that color so much and can't wait to share the full room reveal. I also plan to get new lamps and hopefully these will work in our guest bedroom or else they will go in the shop. I have two sets of this lamps and they are the perfect combination of rustic meets weathered wood… I just can't get enough. You may have noticed the end tables as well...

Here's abetter shot. We have two matching side tables, one on each side of the bed for the husband and I. I found them at a garage sale and I practically stole them. I even got money off the price because I was from North Carolina and the guy loved my accent. Uh huh ;-) I love the shape, the price was more than right and they have the potential to be painted although I'm not sure if I will yet.

More shots of the headboard. I have a few options from previous purchases for above the headboard. Pretty sure we will be doing a mirror but can't make any promises.

I love the subtle beauty of this headboard. With classic lines, tufted headboard and finished off with nailhead trim…and I forgot to take photos of the cute feet that it comes with.

Here are a few more detailed shots of the sides, nailhead trim and fabric. I am in love! If you love it too… go tell Kirklands that Home by Ally sent you on their Facebook page by clicking here. This is not a sponsored post, I just love my headboard. :))

I bought this bowl? at the antique mall awhile ago from a vendors booth that I frequent. It's perfect for one of my boxwood balls! And I also have books on my end table… lots of books. I did take the Hunger Games books out of the picture because I didn't want to be a dork! But at least I told you anyways! ;-) Hehe! The book I have below was a wonderful gift, a book of quotes.

And from the same vendor are these vintage pillow cases. They are so delicate and pretty.

Now that inspiration has really struck, I have started to browse for a new light fixture, a nice comforter or quilt and some accessories. I also picked up a large and long french provincial style dresser that mimics the lines of our side tables. I paid $100 for it but sold a few things to make it FREE. Let me know what y'all think of the new headboard and if you love it. If you don't…well… don't tell me.

Oh! And before I forget! Exciting news so I'll get right to it! Sadly, Dawn and I are both leaving Wildwood Antique Mall for a new adventure with our friend Heather, from Pinneapple Avenue! Heather is opening her own shop called "Rehab- Vintage Market & Unique Home Decor" and we will be located in her shop beginning next month! Here's a peek at her new logo that I had the privilege of making! I can't wait to show y'all progress of our space and hopefully you can come visit too!

$1.00 Yardsale frames update

First off, let me start by saying I really suck. I get really excited for projects and immediately start on them without taking a before picture. Please tell me I'm not the only one. These frames were no exception. I got them at a yard sale for $1.00 for both and thought they were the sweetest little things I ever did see! I could see them in a nursery in the future but for now, I'd give them a facelift for our home. Have you updated an old frame lately? All you need is some fresh paint, paint brushes & a little creativity! All I used for this project was a sample of paint from Lowes I got in the clearance section, a paint brush, primer (optional) and a printer with printer paper. (I used card stock).

Currently, they are hanging in the kitchen but they won't be staying there. So, let me give you a quick run through of this cheap, easy and fast DIY. All I did was give each frame a light sanding to better assist the better in adhering. I put on one coat on primer and then two coats of regular Valspar paint. The mats came with the frame so all I needed were new pictures for it. I debated putting old post cards or vintage photographs in these but for now, the quotes will do. I simply found a quote that I loved, in this case, this bible verse. I picked out a font that I had in photoshop and simply aligned it to fit in the frame. I then printed out the bible verse, cut the paper (I used card stock but that's optional to you!) to fit the frame and complete! The frames have a sorta pinkish-cream look to them which I'm not really digging but I'm sure I can find new ones for fairly cheap if I do decide to change them.

They hang from small black rope that I might change to satin black ribbon for more of an impact. But I love how sweet and adorable these look together and I am totally happy with my $1.00 frames. Sometimes the cheapest things are the best things...

Super simple DIY that I thought I would show y'all today. I'm working on other projects around the house so I hope to have them up here in the next few days. I can't wait to show y'all all the new furniture I've been getting and the *new* to me… furniture that is going in our home! Anyways, stay tuned. If you have done a project like this, show me on Facebook by clicking here!
